On October 25, 1999, actor Matthew McConaughey made headlines for all the wrong reasons.

The actor was busted for "disturbing the peace" after cops were called to his Texas home by a neighbor, and found him playing the bongos and dancing in the nude, with another man who was clapping along.

McConaughey was booked on suspicion of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also hit with a charge of resisting transportation after he allegedly ignored an officer’s request to put on pants and shoved the cop after he attempted to get him into the squad car.

McConaughey spent nine hours in county jail before he was released on $1,000 bond. The drug charges were eventually dropped, though the star did plead guilty to violating Austin's noise ordinance, for which he paid a $50 fine.

Though the arrest undoubtedly led to a lot of "dazed and confused" jokes, McConaughey later told GQ magazine that he was able to understand the public's perception of him after the incident.

<em>"Now I get it</em>," he said. "<em>Outdoors, shirtless on the beach, does a lot of rom-coms, girlfriend loves him, good-looking. It's like he rolls out of bed and shows up and makes it look easy.</em>" Sounds just about as smug as his mug shot looks.

McConaughey has sought grittier subject matter in recent years, and went on to attain global superstardom with roles in projects including HBO's True Detective. In 2014, he won an Oscar for Best Actor for Dallas Buyers Club.

In 2016, McConaughey surprised students at the University of Texas at Austin — his alma mater — by offering them a ride in a golf cart to help promote a safety program on campus.
