The search for Maleina and Faloma has led investigators to track down leads in Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington state. Law-enforcement agents interviewed the girls’ parents and have not charged them with any crimes.

Talking to a reporter, FBI special agent Tom Simon said, "We found no human remains and no evidence of the girls’ disappearance. We consider this to be a good thing, not a bad thing, because it gives us hope that the girls are still alive somewhere and can be recovered safely."

Elbert Quitugua, Maleina and Faloma’s grandfather, told the press, “We are pretty sure that somebody out there has information. All we’re asking is that we are given closure in our search for the children. We all wish that the people who know something about their disappearance will find it in their hearts to help bring closure, and help us solve the case.”
