On the evening of Sunday, April 23, 2023, Dr. Devon Hoover, a 53-year-old neurosurgeon, was found dead in his Detroit home.

When Hoover didn’t show up for a scheduled weekend visit, his concerned family in Indiana had called authorities to do a wellness check. While searching the home, police found him wrapped in a blanket in the crawl space of his attic. He had a fatal gunshot wound to the head, reported PEOPLE.

Hoover’s vehicle was found dumped elsewhere in the city, according to HuffPost. Police have revealed that they’re investigating Hoover’s death but haven’t shared further updates.

Hoover’s family shared a message with Local 4, stating, “We, the family of Devon Hoover, wish to express our profound sadness at the loss of a beloved son, brother, and uncle. We grieve his untimely death and will miss him greatly. We are so grateful for the many words of kindness and stories from people who were touched by his life. He was a gift from God and used his talents to bless many.”

A Facebook group, Justice for Dr. Devon Hoover, was formed to seek answers in the killing. In it, many of the doctor’s former patients have shared how he changed and saved lives.

The Detroit Free Press reported that those who knew Hoover are in shock and shared that his friend and neighbor Paddy Lunch described him as an “exceptional person in nearly every way”. She added that he was “a loving son and brother, a brilliant, accomplished surgeon, an unrivaled collector and caretaker of all things beautiful, and a champion of art and culture. But perhaps most admirably, he was beyond generous with his time and his treasure."

According to WXYZ, Hoover was a board-certified neurosurgeon with Ascension Michigan. He had a special interest in neck and back disorders.

Ascension Michigan stated, “Devon Hoover, MD, was a dedicated and well-respected member of the Ascension Michigan family and will be greatly missed by our community. Our sincerest condolence and heartfelt prayers are with his family, friends and fellow associated during this incredibly difficult time.”
