Ex-Husband Suspected Of Killing, Cooking & Eating Missing Woman
GUERRERO, MEXICO — Mexican police say that they believe a young woman who disappeared several days ago was killed, cooked on a stove, and eaten by her ex-husband.
The dismembered remains of 28-year-old Magdalena Aguilar Romero were found on Monday inside pots on a stove in Taxco in the state of Guerrero in southern Mexico. “It is presumed that she was cooked,” state security spokesman Roberto Alvarez said. Some of Romero’s remains were also found in plastic bags stored in the refrigerator.
Police say the victim’s ex-husband, César López Arciniega, is the prime suspect. According to authorities, Arciniega is suspected in what is being investigated as a “femicide” — meaning the murder was directly related to her gender.
Guerrero state prosecutors said in a statement that Romero left her home in the city of Taxco the morning of January 13. She said that she would pick up her children at Arciniega’s home in the afternoon — but was never heard from again.
Police are searching for Arciniega, who is believed to be on the run.
According to a report last month by the Mexican government and the U.N. Women agency, murders of women in Mexico have risen sharply over the last decade.
