Christy Bautista, a 31-year-old woman from Harrisonburg, Virginia, went to Washington, D.C. for a concert, but was tragically murdered shortly after checking into her hotel room.

On Friday, March 31, 2023, Bautista checked into the Ivy City Hotel around 5:55 p.m. on Friday, March 31, 2023, according to NBC News4. She parked her car directly in front of the room which she’d been assigned and went inside.

According to CCTV footage that was gathered later, George Sydnor Jr., 43, rode his red bicycle into the hotel parking lot less than an hour later, around 6:44 p.m. He got off his bike in front of Bautista’s hotel room and seemed to be listening at her door. Court documents stated that Sydnor doesn’t ever appear to knock on the door or make his presence known to the victim.

Shortly after that, another guest at the hotel who was out for a smoke saw Bautista open the door to her room then heard the woman screaming, “Help! Help!” A man inside the victim’s room, who’s believed to be Sydnor, then pulled her back inside and slammed the door. That moment is also caught on CCTV footage, according to PEOPLE.

The witness who saw Bautista in distress called for help, but by the time authorities arrived ten minutes later, it was too late to save the woman’s life.

When police banged on the door, Sydnor answered and said that everything was fine, but police officers could see through the half-open blinds that he had blood on his hands.

At approximately 7 p.m., police returned with a master key. Sydnor was still in the room when police then found Bautista lying on the ground. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and the medical examiner later determined she had been stabbed more than 20 times. One of those stab wounds punctured her spinal column, which would have likely caused paralysis, but it’s not known if the victim was conscious at that time.

A Santoku-style knife was found at the scene and was the apparent murder weapon. The other half of the knife was inside Sydnor's black jacket, according to WUSA9. Also, upon further inspection, not only did Sydnor have blood on his hands, but he also had blood on his shoes, pants, and vest. He also admitted his hand had been chopped with the knife.

At the time of the murder, Sydnor was out on bail for armed robbery charges and was experiencing homelessness. There’s no indication that the victim knew her alleged killer, and there is no known motive.

Sydnor was charged with first-degree murder. On Monday, April 3, he was arraigned and held without bond for the murder charge against him.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for funeral expenses by Ashley Bautista. She stated on the page, “Christy made an impact on everyone’s lives that she encountered. She was a shining light that lifted up everyone’s spirits around her. She encouraged people to do things they were afraid of and cheered them on. She showed them what true strength was through her courageous actions. She would remember one small, random thing you said and find any way to help. Her life was ended way too short by a cruel act of violence that she did not deserve.”

The page now has over three times the amount of the initial goal for donations. Bereaved loved ones are writing condolences and sharing memories while making donations. She is being remembered as a sweet and caring person whose love of music shined in her life.

Christy Bautista’s aunt told FOX 5, "Our family is devastated by the loss of our beloved Christy. She brought joy to everybody who knew her and was a shining light in all of our lives. Please respect our privacy as we mourn her at this time."
