On March 28, 2015, a man on a walk with his girlfriend was shocked to find a woman asleep on the back porch of a vacant home for sale near Charles E. Jordan High School in Durham, North Carolina.

The man called 911 to report the situation, but police realized the grim truth as soon as they arrived on scene — the woman wasn’t asleep, and she wasn’t a woman at all. She was no more than 18.

The young, Black female was face down on the porch about 10 feet from the back door. She was wearing gray sweatpants and a T-shirt with Elmo on it. There was blood around her body and spattered about knee height on the house.

Detectives were shocked by the brutality of the teen’s injuries. She had multiple cuts to her face, head, and chest. As they surveyed the scene, they noticed two things — there was a cell phone case near the body but no phone, and there was a small piece of paper sticking out of the girl’s pocket.

That piece of paper was a hall pass from Jordan High School, and it was signed by one of the principals and dated for the day before.

Police were able to quickly track down the principal who met them at the school to look at security footage from Friday, March 27 — the day before spring break. They soon saw a student walking the halls wearing gray sweatpants and an Elmo T-shirt.

The student, the principal told police, was Tierra Hall.

The Final Day

The school had nearly 50 security cameras recording activity in the halls, and the authorities were able to trace Tierra’s movements throughout the morning of March 27. Around midday, security cameras recorded Tierra walking through the halls with a male student.

To detectives, the two looked like typical teens horsing around at school. They talked to one another, and Tierra appeared to be smiling.

The interaction took a turn when the male student snatched Tierra’s phone from her hand and quickly walked away.

Surveillance footage captured Tierra pursuing the young man, who the principal was able to identify as Kelton Fox, Tierra’s ex-boyfriend.

The outdoor cameras showed Kelton walking away from the school in the direction of the house with Tierra following closely behind.

When the school cameras lost sight of the pair, a neighborhood security camera caught the two just down the block from the home where Tierra’s body was found. That evidence gave police all they needed to bring the teen in for questioning and execute a search warrant at his home.
