Jermiera Ivory Fowler, a 31-year-old woman in Birmingham, Alabama, was found murdered after she went to make a purchase she found on Facebook Marketplace, a popular way for people to buy and sell items in their local area.

Fowler, a mother of two, was driving a white Nissan Versa Note and was last seen on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 31, 2023, reported CNN. At around 9:00 p.m. the next day, on June 1, Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel responded to a call and found a burned body in the 1000 Block of Sellers Road in Roebuck, Alabama. She was unresponsive and had visible signs of trauma. She had been shot, and investigators now believe she was shot before being burned.

Fowler’s body was found behind the residence of Herbert Brown who has lived in the home for 15 years. He told police he woke up to flames behind his backyard fence on June 1 and soon made the dark discovery of a burning body.

Brown told WVTM, "The firefighters came. They put the fire out, and the police stayed out there until 2 or 3 in the morning just scanning the place."

"I seen this picture and it went through my mind, that's that lady out here that's burning," he added. "This shouldn't have happened to her like that."

The victim was declared deceased at the scene, according to a media release from the Birmingham Police Department, and she was later identified as Jermiera Ivory Fowler. Her death is being investigated as a homicide, but no suspect has been publicly identified yet. Although police did confirm that she was going to meet up with someone to buy an item she found on Facebook Marketplace, they couldn’t confirm whether the killing was related to that exchange.

If you have any information about the death of Fowler, please contact Birmingham’s homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or report a tip anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
