A California man led police on a chase after allegedly choking and battering a senior citizen, authorities said.

According to a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department news release, Paul Stephen Otto, 27, assaulted his 83-year-old former landlord on Friday.

Otto allegedly choked and assaulted the man after Otto "illegally entered the victim’s residence for the purpose of stealing an automobile,” authorities said.

Otto reportedly left the scene in his own vehicle. When police tracked him down, he fled “at a high rate of speed,” according to the news release.

Officers detained Otto without incident after the vehicle he was driving crashed into another car, police said. He was treated and released from an area hospital. Otto’s alleged victim also received treatment for his injuries.

Otto is being held on $300,000 bail at the Robert Presley Detention Center for suspicion of attempted murder and cruelty to a dependent adult, Los Angeles’ KTLA News reported.
