LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK — On May 19, 1992, a 17-year-old high school student named Amy Fisher shot Mary Jo Buttafuoco, the wife of her alleged lover Joey Buttafuoco, in the face. Amy instantly became infamous as the tabloid press dubbed her the “Long Island Lolita” and devoted countless hours of programming to re-hashing the gritty details of her alleged relationship with thirty-something auto-body-shop owner Joey.

And who could forget the over-the-top TV movies? In the early nineties, The Amy Fisher Story starring Drew Barrymore, Casualties of Love: The Long Island Lolita Story with Alyssa Milano in the lead role, and Amy Fisher: My Story with Noelle Parker were all guilty pleasures.

Fisher was initially charged with first-degree attempted murder, but eventually plead guilty to first-degree aggravated assault and served seven years in prison. Since her release in 1999, she has had a colorful career.

She first worked as a columnist for the Long Island Press, and released her memoir If I Knew Then… in 2004. In 2003 Fisher married Lou Bellera, an event photographer about 25 years her senior, had three children with him, and later embarked on a career in the adult-film industry.

On August 21, 2016, Fisher turned 42 and — just in time for her birthday — she posted a link to the Amazon Wish List Amy XXX on Twitter @RealAmyFisher. Her most-wanted items include a $700 beverage cooler, a $20 iPad case, and a $100 gift card from Outback Steakhouse.

Her foray into adult films began back in 2007, when she briefly split from Bellera and rekindled her relationship with Joey — just in time to pitch a reality-TV show. Bellera then sold a sex tape that he had made with Fisher to a distribution company. She fought the tape’s release at first, but eventually began promoting it.

In 2009, Fisher released a pay-per-view film called Amy Fisher: Totally Nude & Exposed, and signed a contract to make several more films, which included Deep Inside Amy Fisher and Seduced by a Cougar 22.

She said at the time while appearing on Celebrity Rehab: “I need employment, no one else will give me employment. I just go with it — I don’t know what else to do.” Fisher stopped making adult films in 2011, but said that she would be open to offers in the future. She divorced Bellera in 2015, and since then she has popped up on several porn sites doing webcam work.

Joey eventually admitting to having sex with Fisher when she was 16, and served four months for statutory rape. Mary Jo and Joey stayed together following the shooting, but eventually divorced in 2003.

Over the years, Joey has had several more brushes with the law. In 1995 he pleaded no contest to solicitation of prostitution, and in 2004 he was sentenced to a year in jail for auto-insurance fraud. He served another three months in 2007 for illegal possession of ammunition. Despite his brief fling with Amy in 2007, he remains married to his current wife Evanka.

Mary Jo survived the shooting, but has endured several surgeries over the years for partial paralysis of her face and loss of hearing in one ear. She wrote a book about her ordeal, Getting it Through My Thick Skull, in which she called Joey a “sociopath.”

Speaking about the public’s continued fascination with the case, Mary Jo told Good Morning America:Why do we like train wrecks? Why do we like to watch? Why do we slow down when we go past an accident scene? It’s the nature of the beast, I guess.” In 2012, she married print-shop owner Stu Tendler in Las Vegas.

Fisher fans may need to make their move quickly if they want to buy her a birthday present: The Daily Dot recently reported that Amazon has deleted several adult stars’s wish lists without warning. Tanya Tate, the British performer known for the Game of Thrones adult parody Game of Bones, said that the site removed her list saying that she had violated the terms that forbid “bartering.” Several other performers have claimed that Amazon’s policies in this area appear to be rather vague.

In May of 2017, Fisher relocated from Florida back to New York, to her mother’s house on Long Island. She was reportedly performing in steamy online cam shows that charge $10 per minute to view. When her ex-husband Lou Bellera suggested to Fisher that she do more “normal” work, Fisher replied, “No, I’m spoiled and there’s too much money to be made.”
