Boy Who Saved Sister From Carjacking Is Hailed As A Hero By Police: Video
Dalvir Singh was taken into custody and charged with two counts of kidnapping, grand theft, and felonious assault for dragging.
MIDDLETOWN, OH — The eight-year-old Ohio boy who escaped a stolen car with his sister after a stranger jumped in and tried to drive away has been hailed as a hero by police.
The Middletown Division of Police will be recognizing the boy’s quick action to not only get out of the vehicle, but also make sure that his sister got out with him, according to the Journal-News.
The incident began Thursday afternoon at around 4:18 P.M., when Nita Coburn, 69, was taking her daughter to the emergency room at Atrium Medical Center.
Her two grandchildren, 8-year-old Chance and 10-year-old Skylar, were sitting in the back seat, according to MSN.
As Coburn helped the woman out of the car, 24-year-old Dalvir Singh allegedly jumped into the driver's seat and tried to drive off — with the children still inside.
Chance opened the door and tried to escape, but Singh allegedly grabbed Skylar's hooded sweatshirt, which prevented her from leaving the vehicle.
But Chance was able to grab her, pull her away from Singh, and hold on to her as they both jumped out of the still-moving car on the passenger side, surveillance footage shows.
Meanwhile Coburn, not realizing that her grandchildren had gotten away, continued to pursue Singh. Singh locked the door, but Coborn grabbed the car and held on until it accelerated at a high rate of speed, forcing her to eventually let go.
Two officers spotted Singh leaving the scene in the stolen vehicle, and were able to stop and arrest him.
"This little guy is a hero. No question," police chief Rodney Muterspaw said in a statement. "He pulled his sister out of the car with no concern for his own safety."
Singh was taken into custody and charged with two counts of kidnapping, grand theft, and felonious assault for dragging. He is being held under a $200,000 bond in the Middletown City Jail.
