A Washington woman has been arrested after police say she fatally shot her 14-year-old daughter in the head as the teen tried to call 911 during a domestic dispute.

Svetlana Laurel, 52, has been charged in the death of 14-year-old Natalie Gulizia.

Natalie called 911 on Tuesday night to report that her mother and father were fighting. Laurel had been let into her ex-husband’s home on Smithers Avenue South on Tuesday night by the divorced couple’s 12-year-old son, according to the Renton Police Department.

The King County probable cause affidavit stated that Laurel asked her son to show her around the house, which she had only visited once before, and told him she had brought him some of his clothes as a Christmas gift.

Laurel, a computer scientist, and her ex-husband met while both worked for Boeing in Texas. The couple divorced in 2015, and were reportedly still fighting over property. When her ex-husband and daughter Natalie returned home, “Svetlana was holding a Taser, and used it” on him, according to KIRO.

Laurel then allegedly zip-tied her ex-husband and son, and pulled out a pistol. She then told her ex-husband that she was going to shoot him because he “ruined her life,” according to court documents. Natalie ran upstairs and called the police from her bedroom. “When the mother found out she was calling 911, she shot her,” Cmdr. David Leibman of the Renton Police Department said.

The 911 operator could hear a woman screaming “You called 911!” followed by a voice that sounded like “blow your head off” and then zip-tie sounds, followed by screams and a loud bang, the police report stated.

The 12-year-old boy “hopped” to his sister's room and saw that her head was covered in blood, according to court documents. The children's father told police that he heard a gunshot, and that his ex-wife attempted to shoot him – but was unable to fire due to a malfunction in the pistol. After the gun jammed, the father said he struggled with Laurel and was able to take the weapon away from her.

Laurel was originally booked on suspicion of second-degree murder. According to prosecutors, it is likely the charge will be escalated to first-degree murder. She is currently being held in a Seattle jail without bail.
