'Torture Occurred In This House': 10 Kids Removed From California 'House of Horrors'
FAIRFIELD, CA — Ten children have been removed from a California home filled with garbage and feces after their parents allegedly abused them.
Sharon Henry, chief deputy district attorney for Solano County, said at a news conference that “torture occurred in this house.”
The children, aged four months to 12 years, were removed from their home after their mother, Ina Rogers, 30, reported that her oldest child was missing.
Police found filthy conditions in the home shared by Rogers and 28-year-old Jonathan Allen, who is the father of eight of Rogers’ children, according to police Lieutenant Greg Hurlbut.
Hurlbut said that officers found the home to be unsanitary, with “spoiled food on the floor” and “animal and human feces and a large amount of debris.”
The children have reportedly given statements to authorities indicating that the abuse has been going on for several years. Some of the wounds described by the children are consistent with having been shot with a BB gun. But Rogers, who gave reporters a tour of her house on Monday, has denied all allegations of abuse.
“There’s no broken bones. There is no major scars, nothing,” Rogers told reporters. “My kids get bumped and bruised and scratched because they’re kids, but that’s it.”
Rogers, who works as an EKG technician, explained that the children all slept on cots in one bedroom because they were close — and said that her home was messy due to the fact that she had turned it upside-down while looking for her missing son. The missing 12-year-old was found by police asleep in a nearby neighbor’s yard, under a bush.
Rogers defended herself to reporters:
“Not only do I have 11 children and I’m 30 years old, but I also home-school all of my children, and people don’t agree with that lifestyle. And so I’ve had many people question my right to parent, and I just feel like this whole situation was exploded.”
She also expressed the belief that their family is being judged on the appearance of Allen, who works as a tattoo artist. “My husband has a lot of tattoos. He looks like a scary individual, and that’s why people are so quick to judge him,” she said. “But my husband is an amazing person. I am an amazing mother.”
She was arrested and released after posting $10,000 bail on April 9.
Allen has pleaded not guilty to seven counts of torture and nine counts of felony child abuse. He is reportedly being held on $5.2 million bail.
