MYRTLE BEACH, SC — A woman was startled when a mud-covered man suddenly appeared on her front porch and began body-slamming the door in an attempt to gain entry.

On Dec. 21, Savannah Brotherton was baking Christmas cookies when the new Ring doorbell camera she had just installed two days before alerted her to the presence of the male, who was wearing a dirty t-shirt and jeans.

“I heard a loud bang but the mixer was going and the music was blaring and so then the phone chimed and said somebody was at the door and so that’s when I heard another bang and I knew something was not right because I don’t have unexpected visitors,” Brotherton, 30, told WMBF.

Surveillance footage showed the would-be intruder — who she said “looked like the walking dead” — throw his shoulder against her door multiple times. Head wobbling, he then stumbled around before sprawling backwards over the porch’s railing.

“I was standing on the other side of the door with my gun in hand,” said Brotherton. “I thought I was going to have to kill him.”

The frightened homeowner called for help and the man eventually ran off into the night. Responding officers found him in a ditch and he was transported to the hospital for treatment.

"He has not been charged with any crime," said Myrtle Beach Police Department Corporal Thomas Vest, explaining law enforcement would have a hard time proving the man intended to commit a crime due to his impaired condition. "We feel that seeking medical attention for him was the best course of action.”

Countered Brotherton: "This is my home and I don’t want to have to defend myself behind my door.”
